How To Make Social Distancing Better
Social distancing is hard, but cute sunglasses and dressing up to get cute to finally get out of the house makes it better! I have been able to keep my spirits high and have fun by finding things to do outside. A lot of my friends are still laid off and unemployed, so I have been trying to hang out with them to keep them in good spirits. There are so many things that you can do that make social distancing better if you get creative!
I also have a few friends that work in nursing homes so it’s easy for them to get a bit down. I wanted to share the ideas I’ve come up with for ways to keep 6 feet apart, convince them to get out of the house, and still have a good time. Here are a few things I did this past week that kept a smile on our faces.

I have been trying to get out of the house every day. I think the fresh air and the change of scenery really does a lot to keep me in a good mood. If I sit around, I start thinking too much about this new reality and get into a weird head space.
The easiest excuse I have to get out of the house is to go for coffee. This Monday, I started my day off right with a cup of Starbucks (FYI – I order an iced salted caramel mocha year round – it just doesn’t come with the salt once they run out from the holiday season. For the new Starbucks hires, you can order it as an iced *insert size* toffee nut mocha with whipped cream and caramel drizzle if there’s no longer a button for it.)
Anyways, Starbucks is a great way for me to start my day and start my week! ANDDDD now they have Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Pumpkin Cream Cold Brews!
I also took a trip out to get ice cream today. Drive-thru ice cream or other food runs are great excuses to get out of the house. Food, especially sugar, is another thing that always keeps me happy and makes social distancing better.
Today I went out to the wineries. It’s a good method to catch up with friends if it’s somewhere they know is already easy to socially distance.
At the wineries, tables are even more than 6 feet apart. You can look for anywhere with an open patio. Even your friends that aren’t ready to go out yet, may be inclined to meet you out just from the good weather alone.
You can even say you checked to see how they were social distancing versus just saying, “Let’s go for dinner somewhere.” It worked for me, it could work for you.
So, FYI, I had to mention that today I almost broke my sunglasses! This is why I can’t have nice things! I almost sat on them. But, luckily they were still in their case (as I’ve taught myself to do to after all these years) as I got back into my car after Starbucks
Anyways, today I went out to MGM casino with some fam. Casinos are doing a great job with sanitizer stations and hand sanitizer all over, they’re also enforcing social distancing with every other slot machine turned off. Most casinos are huge so it’s been easy to social distance there.
It’s a great rainy day option too and it’s one of the few places I can convince my parents to come out to. If you’ve never been or want some advice on casinos check out this article. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a good time.
Today I headed for the beach. I went early, to beat the crowds and also to beat the heat. I went by myself, but it was easy to social distance that early, you could invite your friends too for a picnic.
I was excited for one of my friends to come out of hiding and she invited me over to socially distance on her back porch with to-go cocktails. A good couple of cocktails also makes social distancing better. We had to order food in order to be able to take the drinks to go so we ended up getting a charcuterie board.
Today I went hiking at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The smaller buildings are closed but some of the bigger ones are starting to open.
It’s the Asian Lantern Festival right now so it was a great hike. They also have the Dinosaurs exhibit so I got to see all kinds of animals.
We then went to our first drive-thru festival. Cleveland is having a number of these almost every weekend. The majority of them are at churches.
They also are having little food truck get togethers. The festival we went to was the Sts Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church’s Greek Festival 2020.
I walked through the Cleveland Cultural Gardens today. The greenhouse was closed so there were no public bathrooms there, but it was worth the walk!
It’s so beautiful there especially in the summer, and we stumbled across two socially distanced weddings! Super cool.
We then went to another drive thru festival – St Mary Romanian Orthodox Drive-Thru Festival 2020. Let me just say yummmmm. They had a limited menu so we basically just ordered one of everything.
Today we were on the list and headed for church with the fam. There’s only 50 people allowed in service right now so we usually live stream service.
We went for lunch after at Rocky River Brewery. Breweries are also doing a great job with social distancing. We got a sampler and had an amazing fish sandwich.
I then ended the week strong and tired from a week of social distancing by cuddling CLOSELY with my parent’s puppies.
Now is the time to take advantage of what your hometown has to offer. There are probably all sorts of hidden gems that you never knew existed. This is the perfect time to go kayaking and find that hidden waterfall or go to that museum you keep putting off going to. Now is the time to go because it won’t be crowded. You still have a month before it gets cold so get out there and do things before you are stuck indoors all winter!
There is a lot to do out there! You just have to get creative. Don’t let yourself sit at home overthinking what’s going on in the world. Keep your mind occupied and travel within your own city.
